Darkness is a burglar's best friend, so your home security depends on effective exterior lighting. The brighter your yard, the fewer places intruders have to hide and the more likely they'll be noticed by your neighbors or passersby. Below are four lighting and home security tips for protecting your home and family.

How to Improve Home Security With Outdoor Lighting

1. Install Multiple Lights

One ultra-bright floodlight that illuminates an entire property may not be sufficient. It may not reach into all corners and crevices and often casts long shadows. A system of multiple lights, including some equipped with motion detectors that turn on when they sense movement, will provide more effective illumination than a single floodlight, dark recesses included.

2 Protect the Lights

Because they are a first line of defense, home invaders may try to tamper with your security lights. Install them out of reach so that bulbs can’t be unscrewed or broken.

3. Use Clear or White Bulbs

Don’t be tempted to use anything but clear or white bulbs for your home security lights. You don’t want the color of bulbs to distort your view.

Home security4. Pair Lights With a Home Security System

Lights are a terrific deterrent against intruders but are not as effective as a comprehensive security system. Add cameras, window and door alarms, as well as electronic access controls to further undercut the possibility of a break-in.
