While hurricane season lasts from June to November, September is the month with the most frequent hurricane occurrences. Since it’s just around the corner, you may be thinking about how to prepare before any storms arrive. The guide below explains how to get your backup generator ready for an emergency.

How to Get Your Backup Generator Ready for Storms

1. Test It

You don’t want to wait until you need it to make sure your generator is running well. If it’s set up to kick on automatically during a power failure, use the test button, or follow the manual instructions for mimicking a power failure. If the system fails to start, have an electrician inspect it.

2. Perform Maintenance

generatorIf you’re counting on your generator to run for several days, it’s critical that all the components are properly lubricated and ready to run. Make sure it has enough oil and coolant, and that it isn’t leaking either of these vital fluids. Also, replace the fuel filter if it’s dirty or clogged. Finally, have an electrician inspect the belts, air filter, and hoses.

3. Ensure You Have a Fuel Supply

A generator that’s running smoothly doesn’t mean much if you don’t have the fuel necessary to run it. It may be difficult or impossible to obtain fuel once a storm is approaching. Buy enough fuel to run the appliance, and store it in approved containers. If you think you have a big enough supply on hand, make sure it’s not more than a year old. Diesel fuel will oxidize over time, and using it could damage the appliance.
