From time to time, you may notice dead patches on your lawn. Occasionally, the entire surface may turn yellow or brown. There are several reasons why this happens, and fortunately, many of them are easy enough for you or a lawn maintenance team to resolve. Below, you’ll find a helpful guide on why your yard is not as lush and verdant as it used to be.

4 Reasons Why Your Lawn May Turn Brown

1. Overwatering

Though it may seem logical to water your grass when it becomes dry and yellow, overwatering may be the cause of the problem. Excessive moisture shortens the roots of your grass, causing it to become more susceptible to diseases and pest infestations. Try to water your lawn only once per week to regenerate roots and avoid overwatering.

2. Heat

It’s normal for grass to becomelawn mainenance brown and dried when temperatures surge, but it typically turns green again shortly after receiving rainfall. However, if a severe drought has affected your lawn, rehydrate the grass by spraying it with one inch of water per week.

3. Weeds

Weeds compete with grass for water and nutrients, which is why your yard may turn brown when they invade it. As part of your lawn maintenance regiment, apply an herbicide to your grass to prevent weeds from growing, and ensure the grass is healthy.

4. Pests

White grubs, in particular, wreak havoc on lawns. These tiny beetles feast on organic materials and root systems, which kills the grass and results in brown turf. If you notice these small insects, apply an insecticide to your yard to get rid of them, and prevent others from invading.
