If you’re supporting an intramural sports team, heading to a trade show with your company, or drawing attention to a charity, T-shirt printing is a wonderful investment. There are some essential design guidelines to adhere to, so you get lasting results you love. Keep the following in mind while you’re planning.

Do:

Pay for quality.

It’s tempting to purchase the cheapest T-shirt options as possible but consider quality. They may not hold colors as well or stand up to wear. This is a major issue if they’re meant to be regularly re-used, such as with sportswear or employee uniforms. Spend the extra money on quality materials so you get lasting use.

Create a size and color balance.

Make sure they’re not so large that they wrap around the sides or onto seams. It’s best to stick with two complementary colors, like purple and yellow, and to make sure they don’t clash with the T-shirt color. When using fonts, make sure they’re large enough to read and in a legible design.

Don’t:

Jumbo print on the wrong shirts.

Jumbo prints aren’t always appropriate. Because of size limitations, they don’t do well on tank tops and V-necks. They’re often too wide, or the shirt design will cut into the image. If you’re set on this shirt type, adjust your images and text accordingly for T-shirt printing.

Print on seams, pockets, and zippers.

Hoodies, low V-necks, and other shirts with a lot of seams or zippers also won’t adopt prints well because the screen that prints the design won’t fit evenly over the fabric. The same goes for shirt pockets. Avoid printing on these areas at all costs.
