When a loved one dies, children may not know how to handle grief. It can be a difficult process, and every child copes differently. If your family has recently lost a loved one, here are a few tips to help them through the days before and after the funeral service

How to Help Young Children Grieve

1. Tell Them What Happened

When it’s time to tell your children that someone has died, use simple and clear words. Make sure you tell them as soon as possible and away from others; otherwise, seeing adults upset by the news might scare them and they may not know how to react.

2. Listen to Them

Some children may cry, ask questions, or stay quiet. It’s OK for each child to react differently. What matters is that you stay with them, listen to their concerns, and comfort them with a hug. Answer their questions honestly and directly. These actions will comfort them in this troubling time.

3. Talk About the Funeral Servicefuneral service

Let your children attend the funeral service and tell them what will happen in advance. Family members may cry during the memorial and they may see people they don’t know. Prepare them by walking them through the process and share who’ll be there. Explain what happens after the service and whether there will be a cremation or burial. Talk about your family’s beliefs and what happens to your loved one’s spirit after they’re gone.

4. Help Them Remember

In the days following the funeral service, encourage your children to write down their favorite stories or draw pictures that remind them of the loved one. By recalling the happy memories, they’ll stay positive and know that the deceased made a lasting impact on their lives.
