How does it work?

The cells in your body regenerate when existing cells split into two. Cancer cells spread the same way. Treatment can be either systemic or local. When chemical agents enter your bloodstream, they destroy cancer cells or inhibit their growth. This form of chemotherapy is systemic. When chemical agents are targeted directly at the cancer, not delivered via the bloodstream, the treatment is called local chemotherapy.

How is it administered?

An oncologist usually recommends that patients receive chemo through a vein, or intravenously. Sometimes patients receive chemo in other ways. Depending on the patient’s situation, tablets, creams, or injections are used.

How long does it last?

oncologistThe length of chemo treatments is dependent on a lot of factors, including the type of cancer you have and which drugs are being deployed. Your oncologist may also recommend daily, weekly, or monthly cycles. Generally, patients have chemotherapy for a period of months, 6 to 12 , for example, but your course of treatment may be longer or shorter.

How will I feel?

Your overall health, what cancer you have, and your chemotherapy drug dosages will influence how you feel. If you’re having intravenous chemo, the process should be painless after the initial needle poke. It’s normal to feel nauseated and tired after chemo, so it’s best to rest the day of treatment and the day after. Your oncologist will help you manage side effects.
