Homeowners love granite countertops because they are made of strong, durable, and aesthetically pleasing material. When you invest in these, you are choosing a natural stone surface that can last for decades if properly taken care of. If you are considering a bathroom or kitchen remodel that uses these supplies, follow these essential maintenance tips to keep them pristine for years to come.

Do:

Use hot pads and trivets.

While granite is heat resistant, it is still possible for extreme heat to cause damage. Depending on the quality of the material, it can be scorched or warped by pots that have been on the stove or in the oven. When cooking, take the time to set down hot pads or trivets on the countertop before transferring hot pans. This can also help prevent any scuffs or scratches from metal or ceramic cookware.

Reseal the countertops.

Despite being extremely durable, granite is not entirely impermeable. It should be sealed shortly after installation and resealed every 6 to 12 months for the lifetime of the countertop to prevent moisture and bacteria from penetrating the material. Water should never soak into the surface; it should always bead or puddle on the exterior of the granite. Place a few drops of water on the granite and wait 30 minutes to see if it is absorbed to determine if it’s time to reseal.

Don't:

Use abrasive cleaners.

Leave acidic substances on the counter.

When preparing food or drinks on your countertops, don't sit acidic ingredients or materials on the surface, as they can cause etching or erosion. Instead, place them on a cutting board or in another dish. Also, never use the surface itself to cut and prep ingredients. Doing this will protect the natural stone from knife damage and provide a more sanitary food preparation area.
