As any reputable dentist will attest, regular use of a toothbrush is essential to exceptional oral health. It prevents tooth decay and wards off gum disease. However, you must take proper care of your toothbrush to enjoy health benefits. Below are some of the most essential steps needed to care for your toothbrush.

5 Tips for Caring for Your Toothbrush

1. Rinse & Air Dry

DentistBacteria are attracted to any residual food particles on your toothbrush. Rinse the bristles thoroughly after use to clean off any debris. Shake off any excess water and let your brush air-dry. Don't store it in a closed container because trapped moisture can result in mold growth. You can buy vented rubber covers that slip over the brush. These covers offer protection and allow the water to evaporate.

2. Store Upright

Instead of laying it on the counter or stuffing it in a drawer, store your toothbrush upright so it can drain water and air dry more rapidly.

3. Use UV Sanitizer

To destroy bacteria on your toothbrush, a dentist may recommend an ultraviolet sanitizer.  These use UV light to kill microorganisms and prevent illness. The cleaning cycle takes about 10 minutes and leaves your toothbrush germ-free.

4. Distance from Toilet

The act of flushing a toilet creates an aerosol that spreads waste particles throughout the area. To keep these fragments and other bacteria off your toothbrush, always store it away from the toilet. If you have a medicine cabinet, that is often a terrific solution.

5. Replace Periodically

Dentists encourage you to buy a new toothbrush either every 90 days or when you purchase a new tube of toothpaste. A fresh brush ensures the bristles are in excellent condition and provides the most effective dental care.
