Decks provide homeowners with extra living space and a perfect excuse to spend more time outdoors. However, if you want to keep enjoying this space year after year, you need to maintain your deck properly. Here are some of the most important do’s and don’ts to keep in mind.

Do:

Clean it regularly.

decksDirt, leaves, and debris can stain and damage your deck over time. To keep it in excellent condition, sweep it regularly. Hose down the surface and use a deck cleaning solution about once per year.

Stain and seal.

Every couple of years—or when it starts to show signs of wear—re-stain or paint your deck and use a protective sealant. Make sure you clean it fully beforehand and then sand the surface so the material sticks to the wood.

Don’t:

Use abrasive materials for cleaning.

Chemical cleaners like bleach can fade or strip away the paint and stain, so stick with water or dedicated deck cleaning solutions. Additionally, power washers can strip away paint or damage the wood when used incorrectly. Make sure you constantly move the nozzle and use low-pressure settings on your deck, or stick with a regular hose.

Overlook signs of damage.

Loose nails, rotting boards, and splintered wood can lead to significant safety hazards for anyone spending time on your deck. If you notice any of these issues, call a professional right away. Additionally, inspect it thoroughly at the beginning of each season to catch any potential issues that might otherwise go unnoticed, such as holes and weak or decaying areas.
