When a loved one has passed away, or you know you don’t have much time left with them, making funeral arrangements is a necessary step. There are many factors to consider to ensure the funeral services are planned correctly and in a timely fashion. Here are a few tips to help.

A Guide to Planning Timely Funeral Arrangements

1. Religious Considerations

funeral arrangementsSome religions have rules about when the funeral can take place. Jewish law requires burial 24 hours after death while Roman Catholic laws don’t give a preset time frame. Islam requires the burial to happen as soon as possible; ideally, it should take place within 24 hours.

2. Viewings & Funerals

If you are not bound by a 24-hour rule, you should still have the funeral scheduled within a few days of the death. Funeral homes can help you plot out an itinerary and will help you set up viewing times for one or two days based on your needs. During that time, contact the religious leaders to ensure they can perform services within the next couple of days.

3. Obituaries & Announcements

Death announcements and obituaries should be written and sent out as soon as possible after your loved one passes. Write any announcements and obituaries after you make funeral arrangements. Include a biographical sketch, a photo, and service times.
