FAQ on Root Canals, Dunkirk, New York

When visiting your dentist for a routine checkup, your overall oral health will be evaluated. If they discover a tooth is decayed or infected, they may recommend root canal therapy to alleviate your discomfort. If you’re unfamiliar with this procedure, you may have many concerns about it. To prepare you for your upcoming appointment, here are answers to a few of the questions you might have.

Questions About Root Canals Answered

What are the benefits of getting one?

A root canal involves cleaning the interior of your tooth to eliminate bacteria and damaged nerves and pulp. Once the inside of the tooth is successfully cleaned, you’ll be able to save it from extraction. Tooth pain, sensitivity to hot and cold foods, and swelling of the gums will also end. You’ll soon be able to chew and speak without any discomfort.

What’s the procedure like?

Your dentist will begin your root canal treatment by administering a local anesthetic to numb the affected area. The treatment site will be isolated and kept dry using a dental dam. Next, the dentist will drill a small hole into the tooth to access the interior. They’ll remove the damaged pulp, decayed nerves, and present bacteria. Once this is done, they will seal the hole with a temporary filling. In a follow-up appointment, you’ll receive a permanent crown or filling to fully restore the shape and structural integrity of the tooth.

How can I prepare for the appointment?

Root CanalTo promote quick healing, your dentist may encourage you to refrain from drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes for at least 72 hours before the procedure. Enjoy a hearty meal a few hours before your appointment, since you may experience some discomfort immediately following your root canal and not feel like eating.

What is recovery like?

In the day or two following your treatment, you may experience some inflammation and sensitivity. Your dentist will encourage you to stick to a diet of soft foods, use over-the-counter pain medication when necessary, and rest as much as possible. Continue to brush and floss at least twice a day. Professional teeth cleanings are also encouraged every six months to help you maintain optimal oral health moving forward.
