Dentures are an excellent solution to substantial tooth loss. While this procedure is very common, many patients go into the process with a lot of questions. Understanding what to expect and how to care for dentures ensures success after the treatment is complete. Below are answers to common questions to help you understand this effective oral solution.

A Patient’s Guide to Dentures

Are there different types of dentures?

When a patient retains some natural teeth, a dentist may recommend partial dentures. This apparatus is made up of a plastic base with attached artificial teeth. If no teeth remain, complete dentures are typically used. Complete dentures can be conventional, which means that the patient must wait weeks before the set is ready, or they can be immediate, which are often used as a temporary solution until the conventional set is ready.

How do you care for them?

They must be cared for in the same manner as you would care for natural teeth. Dentures should be brushed on a daily basis using a non-abrasive cleanser and soft-bristled toothbrush. The mouth should be cleaned as well, as gums can still develop issues from insufficient dental care. Dentures should be soaked at night using an appropriate cleanser. If they dry out, their comfort may be compromised.

Am I eligible for this treatment?

denturesThose who experience substantial tooth loss are ideal candidates for dentures. However, the best candidates have healthy gums and strong jaw bone tissue. Your dentist can evaluate your oral health and make a recommendation from there.

What are denture adhesives?

While your dentures should fit on their own, adhesives can increase their grip. There are paste and powder adhesives; however, your dentist may recommend one over the other, based on your gum health. Keep in mind that adhesives are not a solution for ill-fitting dentures, so if yours are uncomfortable, it’s best to allow a dentist to refit them.
