Driving a truck is a demanding job. Since you’re out on the road for long stretches of time, you want to make sure you’re careful. Proper safety precautions can allow you to minimize problems on the road and stay safe for the long haul. Take a look at a few tips if you’re a heavy haul driver.

3 Safety Tips for Heavy Haul Drivers

1. Watch Out for Inclement Weather

Heavy haulBad weather can be dangerous for heavy haul truck drivers. Slick roads make it easier to lose control and heavy rain or snow can make it hard to see. Even a slight loss in control or visibility can wreak havoc when you’re operating a big truck.

When you are empty, it’s best to lower your speed when driving through bad weather and be extra diligent about your blinkers on a turn to warn the drivers around you that you’ll be slowing down. You can do this by activating your turn signal a few seconds earlier than you usually would. It’s unlawful to drive with an oversize load in inclement weather.

2. Maintain the Truck

Besides watching the road, there are a few tools and accessories you can use to outfit your truck. Tie down heavy cargo with chains and binders—ensure you use the right grade and quality based on the weight of the load. At all times, light up the trailer with a 360-degree amber light and place portable magnetic lights on the extremities of the load.

3. Take Caution Near Work Zones

Work zone areas are especially hazardous for heavy haul trucks because there are often narrower passageways, broken roads, and sharp debris. Be extra cautious as you drive through these sectors, reducing your speed and being vigilant for obstacles.
