The springs on your garage door allow you to lift an otherwise heavy object. Extension springs are the most common and are mounted above the door tracks. Garage doors over 400 pounds use torsion springs mounted on the same wall as the door. Watch for these warning signs of spring replacement, so your garage door doesn’t pose a safety risk to you or your home.

The Warning Signs It’s Time for a New Garage Spring

1. The Garage Door Is Stalling

Your garage door should always open manually with ease and stay open without assistance. Hesitation to open or refusal to stay open means your springs are not providing enough tension for the door to operate. To test automatic doors, close your garage and disconnect the garage opener. If you are unable to manually open the door, your springs are damaged.

2. The Garage Door Is Crooked

Garage DoorsWhen one extension spring is broken or damaged, it puts extra pressure on the opposite, functioning spring. This extra work pulls on your garage door, causing it to be visibly uneven when opening or while closed. If you don’t replace the spring promptly, your garage door can get stuck on the track and become unusable.

3. The Springs Are Separated

Your springs should be tightly wound when the garage door is closed. A stretched spring means there’s no tension, and it needs replacing. Because torsion springs are so tightly wound, they often snap when they are too worn. You will notice a visible 2-inch gap if your torsion spring is broken. Worn or broken springs should be replaced immediately.
