Proper care of your braces is necessary to ensure the treatment is a success. You must not only brush at least twice a day, but also avoid foods that could cause damage to the device or become lodged between the teeth. If you’ve recently had braces placed, here are some of the snacks you should not consume during this period.

Which Foods Should People With Braces Avoid?

braces1. Hard Candy

Hard candy, like lollipops or mints, can damage the metal wires when you bite down. The high sugar content may also lead to cavities and decay, as candy pieces could become stuck in areas that are difficult to reach with your brush.

2. Chewy Candy

Sticky foods are also problematic. Sweets like gum and taffy are more likely to get stuck in the brackets and under wires. They may prove difficult to remove once hardened, so avoid these altogether.

3. Whole Apples

While apples are healthy, you should avoid biting into whole ones with braces. Doing so can bend the wires and require an emergency trip to the dentist. Instead, cut them into bite-sized pieces.

4. Popcorn

Popcorn shells can easily become lodged in your braces and between your teeth. Flossing is difficult when you have wires blocking the gaps, so you may miss stuck bits during your oral hygiene routine. If you have trouble removing food from between the teeth, try using a water flosser instead of regular floss, this can make it easier to clean between brackets.

5. Ice

If you have a habit of chewing on ice, now is the time to break it. Much like hard candies, cubes can damage metal wires. To avoid the temptation, choose beverages without ice or chill drinks with reusable, frozen plastic cubes.
