Vinyl siding is a popular go-to for homeowners to protect homes’ exteriors and elevate curb appeals. This option also promotes energy-efficiency. But because siding is continuously exposed to the elements, you should clean it regularly to maintain its qualities. Here are some tips to keep your home’s vinyl siding in exceptional shape.

Do

Use a power washer with caution.

Because the water pressure is high, you must be extremely careful when you operate a washer. Be sure to keep the stream straight at eye level rather than an angle—otherwise, water can push behind the siding and cause moisture issues such as mildew and mold.

Watch where you put your grill.

If you like to cookout in your backyard, make sure your barbecue grill is at least 10 feet away from the exterior of your home. The heat from the grill can warp or melt your vinyl siding, which not only causes cosmetic and structural problems but releases toxic gases too.

Don’t

Use harsh chemicals and cleaning tools.

Also, stay clear of undiluted chlorine bleach, or liquid grease remover. And don’t use abrasive cleaning tools like steel wool or wire brushes. The best way to clean your vinyl siding is to use a soft cloth or nylon bristle brush. Always use a mild household cleaner like oil-based soap or Lysol®.

Paint your vinyl siding.

The PVC material it’s composed of expands and contracts as temperatures change, which can cause cracking and other noticeable imperfections if painted over. Additionally, if you choose a color that’s too dark, the siding may absorb extra heat and cause the vinyl siding to warp.
