An asphalt driveway is an investment that can last for many years if you take good care of it. Cleaning it will maintain that gorgeous blacktop, boosting your curb appeal and making you happier to come home each day. Follow the tips below for cleaning your driveway paving.

How to Clean Asphalt Driveway Paving

1. Clean Spills Immediately

driveway pavingAsphalt’s sealcoating surface will protect the driveway from staining. However, spills left on the surface can leak through to the aggregate underneath. Use paper towels or cloths to clean up spilled oil or other vehicle fluids. Sprinkle sawdust on the area and leave it overnight to pull up the rest of the spill. If the surface still has a stain, scrub baking soda in with a hard bristle brush and let it sit for 30 minutes.

2. Sweep and Hose

Clean the surface regularly, as dirt and salt chemicals sitting on the surface can be harmful over time. Sweep the surface, taking care to get inside any cracks that run around the edge. Hose down the driveway using a regular garden hose. For a more thorough cleaning you can apply a mixture of warm water and dishwashing soap with a brush.

3. Deep Cleaning

Deep cleaning will remove more grime than a routine hose-down will. A power washer can get this done easily. Have a professional use the power washer rather than doing it yourself; using the wrong technique or holding the nozzle too close to the surface can damage your driveway paving.
