Vodka is one of the most popular liquors, as it provides a base to create an array of colorful cocktails. A proven manufacturing process still stands behind it, as well as the same ingredients since its inception in the Middle Ages. Whether you’re a vodka lover or interested in trying your hand at making it, you’ll find all the basics of the process below.

A Guide to Vodka Manufacturing

Ingredients

Vodka is made from starch- or sugar-based food, including grains like corn and rye, potatoes, soybeans, grapes, rice, and various fruits. Poland, Russia, and Sweden have some of the longest traditions of vodka manufacturing, where they have been produced since the early 1500s.

Manufacturing

liquorTo create vodka, the preferred foundation is ground into the desired grain size. Water and enzymes are then added to convert the starch to sugar, and then yeast is added to ferment the liquor. Once fermented, the alcohol is moved to a still. These column stills distill and filter the vodka. This can happen multiple times, depending on the manufacturer.

During this process, the alcohol content is maximized. Once complete, the vodka is filtered again through carbon to remove residue and is then diluted with water to reach an alcohol content of about 40%. Any artificial flavoring the manufacture chooses is then added, and the vodka is bottled and shipped.
