Motor rewinding is a process that helps restore some or all of an electric motor's functioning. Long periods of use can take a significant toll on the lifespan and efficiency, leading to performance issues or outright breakdowns. Professional winding services bring new life to an old or flagging electric motor and ensure you get more use out of your device. Below is a brief overview of the process and some common signs that can tell you when it needs to be performed.

The Process

winding servicesA motor is rewound through a process called armature winding. The stator core of a motor contains two main components, a winding of copper wire and iron insulation. When a motor overheats or water becomes trapped inside it, the insulation can break down, and the cord can become damaged. Winding services replace the damaged cable with new copper wiring and ensures that the motor is rewound with new insulation.

The success of motor rewinding depends on the condition of the stator core. Since overheating rarely damages the core, it can often be rewound. But if the core is damaged, as in the case of a bearing failure, it likely cannot be fixed, and a replacement will be necessary.

When to Get a Motor Rewound

There are some specific signs that your motor might benefit from winding services. Look for visible evidence of corrosion and any water, oil, or grease accumulated on the engine. Since they depend on magnetic fields to function, corrosion compromises the magnetic qualities of the copper wire and replacing it can offer an effective fix.

Also, check the winding resistance. Consult the owner's manual provided by the manufacturer to find the standard resistance rate for your motor. Use a digital multimeter on the resistance setting, touch the multimeter's red lead to the positive end of the wire windings, and then touch the multimeter's black lead to the negative end. The screen of the multimeter will give you the resistance readings in ohms. If this reading does not match up with the manufacturer's recommendation, consult a winding service.
