Sensitive teeth can be a constant source of discomfort. Since they’re likely linked to an oral health issue or bad habit, you need to get the problem under control. A dentist can offer solutions to fortify enamel and ensure you aren’t causing further damage to your teeth.

3 Reasons Why Your Teeth Are Sensitive

1. Genetics

Some people inherit weak enamel. This condition is called amelogenesis imperfecta or congenital enamel hypoplasia. Your enamel is the protective outer layer on a tooth; when it’s weak, the sensitive dentin layer below is exposed. Hot and cold temperatures have a stronger effect on the tooth’s nerve system, leading to sensitivity-related toothaches. The dentist may offer a special toothpaste to refortify enamel.

2. Teeth Grinding

Extended clenching can have the same effect. Grinding is often related to stress, so be mindful during the day and before bed. Try meditating or deep breathing, and see a mental health professional if needed. If you grind at night, the dentist may recommend a mouthguard.

3. Diet

Certain foods and drinks can cause enamel erosion. The most common are sugary and acidic foods and drinks. Citrus, like grapefruit and lemons, vinegar, candies, fruit drinks, and soda all have a negative impact and wear down enamel. Tooth sensitivity is also a sign that you’re more susceptible to decay, which is why you should speak with the dentist about solutions.
