Even experienced drivers can get into auto accidents if they let down their guard or make unwise decisions. While accidents can occur due to circumstances beyond your control, there are many steps you can take to reduce your chance of disaster on the road. Here are three examples of common causes of accidents and how to avoid them.

3 Auto Accidents Caused by Driver Error

1. Impaired Driving

The largest percentage of driver-related auto accidents are alcohol- and drug-related. Some estimates suggest that almost half of all auto accidents are related to alcohol use alone, and the usage of opioids, marijuana, and other drugs contributes to collision and fatality statistics as well. Although laws regarding impaired driving are strict, millions of drivers get behind the wheel intoxicated every year. You may not be able to control what other drivers do, but by driving sober, you can ensure that you’re in full control every time you get behind the wheel.

2. Cell Phones

auto accidentsMany states prohibit drivers from using their phones while driving, but even using your phone hands-free is a distraction. Though you may feel you’re skilled enough to multi-task while driving, studies by the National Safety Council  (NSC) suggest otherwise. To be fully responsive and perceive driving conditions correctly, your focus should be solely on driving. Thousands of fatalities occur each year as a result of distracted driving, and the NSC estimates that 25% of all auto accidents are caused by cell phone use while driving. Put your phone away when you drive. If your phone offers it, turn on a “do not disturb” setting to disable notifications when you drive.

3. Driving While Fatigued

Fatigue can lead to poor vision, judgment, and decreased reaction times — all of which can be disastrous when you’re driving. In fact, over 300,000 fatigue-related auto accidents occur each year. Long-distance driving or getting behind the wheel when you’re already tired can increase your risk. Medications that cause drowsiness can also lead to drivers falling asleep behind the wheel. Maintain seven to eight hours of sleep a night. If you must take medication that makes you tired, don’t take it before you may need to drive. If you’re feeling too tired to drive, use a ride-sharing service.
