A family dentist performs scaling and root planing as deep cleaning procedures to treat gum disease. Gum disease is a serious issue that affects half of all Americans; if left untreated, it can cause tooth pain, sensitivity, and loss and lead to problems in other parts of the body, such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. To better understand scaling and root planing, below are answers to common questions about these common procedures performed by family dentists.

Answers to Common Questions About Scaling & Root Planing

What do scaling and root planing involve?

Both scaling and root planing are nonsurgical, noninvasive procedures. During the scaling portion of the treatment, your family dentist will scrape plaque and tartar away from below the gum line using either handheld manual or ultrasonic tools. Then, rough spots on the tooth roots are smoothed out using special instruments as a way to prevent plaque and tartar from reaccumulating.

What are the purposes of scaling and root planing?

family dentistThe treatments eliminate the buildup of plaque and tartar below the gumline. This buildup contains bacteria detrimental to the gum tissue and bone and is the primary cause of gum disease. When gum disease reaches a certain point, the gums pull away from the teeth and form pockets. Scaling and planing remove bacteria from these pockets more effectively than a standard dental cleaning can.

Are scaling and root planing painful?

While the treatments sound intense, they are not painful. In most cases, your dentist will numb the gums and tooth roots with a local anesthetic, so you won't feel any discomfort. After scaling and root planing, the teeth and gums might feel a bit sensitive.

How long do scaling and root planing take?

It depends on the severity of your gum disease. Mild or moderate cases can typically be addressed in one visit. More serious instances of gum disease may involve more than one visit to get the gums sufficiently clean and clear.
