While it’s not a topic many people feel comfortable discussing, urine can have odd odors for a number of reasons. In some cases, it may be due to foods you’ve eaten or medications you’re currently taking, which isn’t any cause for alarm. However, in other instances, abnormal urine odors could stem from urinary tract infections, dehydration, and other issues. Here are a few conditions to watch for if you notice unusual smells.

Why Could Urine Smell Strange?

1. Diabetes

If urine has a pungent, sweet smell, it may signal advanced diabetes. This condition is often due to an accumulation of sugar and ketones, which is a type of acid processed by the liver and diverted into the bloodstream and urine. Untreated diabetes can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious condition. A person with advanced diabetes may need to take insulin to control their symptoms.

2. Urinary Tracts Infections (UTI)

Along with a strong smell, urine may also appear cloudy, and you may experience a strong urge to urinate on a frequent basis. While women have a greater risk of developing a urinary tract infection, men can also experience issues. Treatment often includes prescribing antibiotics to stop the infection. Drinking more water is also beneficial for your urinary system.

3. Liver Disease

Strong odors are also a symptom of liver disease. Other symptoms include urine that is dark in color, a decreased flow, or jaundice on the skin or eyes.

There are many different liver diseases that can affect a person’s health. While some occur as a result of alcohol consumption, others happen due to genetic factors. Lifestyle changes, medications, and surgery may be recommended to treat these conditions.
