If you’re thinking about adding a puppy to your family, you’ll need to learn potty-training techniques to teach the little one. Use these do’s and don’ts when getting ready to potty train your new fur baby.

Do:

Start early.

We at The Pet Hale recommend you begin potty training 8-10 weeks, depending on when you add the puppy to your family. No matter their age, you want to get a head start on training by negating bad habits and letting your pup know what you expect of them.  Have plenty of puppy pads on hand, as your little one should not go outside until all his puppy vaccinations are complete.

Use a designated area.

Part of being consistent with potty training involves designating an area where your dog can feel comfortable relieving themselves. Once they associate that area with doing their business, they’ll be able to do so more quickly.

Don’t:

Yell at your puppy.

puppies-HIYour pup’s ability to hold their tiny bladder is limited, so accidents will happen. Though you might feel tempted to yell at them for making a mess in the house, a scolding will only scare them and may result in a bigger mess. Instead, remain calm and take them to their designated area to finish their business. Praise them when they’re done. Before you clean up their accident, let them sniff it, then sternly say, “No.” They’ll learn that this behavior is frowned upon. To help avoid accidents, keep an eye on the time and take your to their designated area every four to five hours at a minimum.

Stop training too soon.

Signs of progress that your dog has grasped going where he should shouldn’t deter you from remaining diligent. Don’t get lax with your training since puppies can be forgetful and might not remember. Keep up with the training and continue to give praise when they are successful until a few months go by without accidents.
