Whether you’re traveling for a vacation or want to relax at a luxury hotel for a day or two, you may not be ready to leave at the end of your scheduled stay. Thankfully, many places allow guests who need a little more time in their rooms to have a late checkout. Here are several times it is appropriate to request this service.

When Can You Request a Late Checkout?

1. When Making the Reservation

Most hotels have a standard checkout time at 11 am or noon so that housekeeping has enough time to prepare the room for the next guest who will check-in at 3 pm. However, if you know your travel plans will require additional time at the hotel, ask for a late check out while making the arrangements. Sometimes, that option is available for a fee. In other cases, they may try to accommodate you if they know the guest occupying the room after you won’t get in until late.

2. During Check-In

hotelIf you are unable to make your request when booking the hotel, do so when talking to the representative at the front desk during check-in. They may be unable to guarantee what you want but alerting them early gives you your best chance of success.

3. Day of Checkout

Weren’t aware you needed a late checkout earlier? You can ask the day of—but strive to do it as early as possible. At this point, the staff should have a sense of their expected occupancy for the night and whether or not it’s necessary to turn over the room as soon as possible. If that option is not available, know that many hotels will hold guests’ luggage for them—so you can sightsee for a few hours after checkout and then return for your bags before making your delayed flight.
