Atlanta is well-known for its musical history, amazing restaurants, and its many sports teams. One of the great aspects of being a sports fan is that there’s always a season going on and a reason to stop by a local bar and root for the home team with friends. From baseball to basketball, Atlanta has a proud tradition of sports teams. Here’s a closer look at the three most popular.

3 Atlanta Teams to Root For

1. Falcons

The Falcons first came to power on June 30th, 1965. Their name was conceived by a high school teacher, who chose the name based on the falcon’s notable courage and dignity when pursuing its prey. They’re a member of football’s NFC South Division, and both the Falcons and the Miami Dolphins have the honor of being the oldest teams in that division. With quarterback Matt Ryan at the helm, there’s a reason for excitement in every game, best exemplified by fans’ passionate chants to “Rise up!”

2. Braves

restaurantThe Braves are the oldest professional sports franchise that has consistently operated since its origination. The baseball team actually got its start in Boston as the Red Stockings before making its way to Wisconsin and finally ending up in Georgia in 1966.

The team won a stunning 14 consecutive division titles from 1991-2005—the longest streak in professional sports history—including a World Series championship in 1995. With such popular young players as Ronald Acuña, Jr. and Ozzie Albies making big waves in SunTrust Park today, watching the Braves has regained much of the 90s’ former excitement.

3. Hawks

While slightly less well-known than the other teams listed here, the Hawks are no slouches when it comes to perseverance. The basketball franchise got its start in 1946 when they were known as Tri-Cities Blackhawks. They moved from Illinois to Wisconsin to Missouri before finally landing in Georgia in 1968. Dominque Wilkins and Dikembe Mutombo were among the team’s best-known players.
