Computed tomography (CT) diagnostics give medical professionals an in-depth look into the human body. These may come in the form of standard CT scans or dental CBCT scans. Although they generate similar results, each has a unique purpose and procedure. If your dentist has recommended a dental CBCT scan, you may wonder how it compares to the CT scan. To help you understand this process, here’s a guide to all you need to know about these imaging procedures.

CT Scan vs. Dental CBCT Scan

CT Scan

dental cbct scanA CT scan is an X-ray technique that provides a cross-sectional view of bones, soft tissue, and blood vessels. It’s more detailed than the standard X-ray because it takes multiple “sliced” images of the body to create a more comprehensive view of the target area. Previously, an operation would be needed to achieve this view. This type of scan is often performed to identify tumors, diagnose muscle and bone disorders, and monitor treatment.

Before the procedure, a technician will give the patient a dye via the mouth, injection, or enema. This creates a contrast that enhances the details of the image. The person then lies on a motorized table that’s fed into a scanner tunnel.

Dental CBCT Scan

The cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan is a dentistry-specific diagnostic tool. A type of CT scan, it’s used to create 3-D images of the jaw, nerve pathways, and dental structures. A dentist will use these results when diagnosing oral cancer, preparing for surgery to remove wisdom teeth, or treating temporomandibular (TMJ) disorders.

During the procedure, you’ll sit or lie on a dental chair while the X-ray device circles your head to capture 360-degree images. The process does not require dyes and is completely painless. The scan will be completed in around 30 seconds, and your appointment may take less than an hour from start to finish. Afterward, your dentist will have a detailed image of your mouth to proceed with treatment.
