When visiting Hawaii, you should find the time to hop in the water to experience the vast ecosystem of this island chain. Aquatic animals, including sharks, are a key part of the state’s biodiversity. If you’re interested in going on a shark tour while vacationing, you may catch a glimpse of several species.

4 Fascinating Sharks That Live in Hawaiian Waters

1. Galapagos

These gray sharks tend to swim in the northwestern portion of Hawaii. You can spot this shark by its brown dorsal fin, white underside, and dark tail. Galapagos sharks in Hawaii can grow up to nine feet or more. Since these creatures generally stay inshore, you may be lucky enough to see one on a shark tour.

2. Tiger

Tiger sharks can grow up to 16 feet and have a rounded snout. This species stays on the move in coastal environments, moving between the surface and 300 feet.

3. Reef

Reef tip sharks are light brown and have black or white markings on the tip of their dorsal fin. They live in reefs and are among the few species of sharks that can remain still while breathing, allowing them to hide among the reef and inside caves. You may spot these sharks in a group since they tend to be social animals.

4. Sandbar

This species may be a common sighing in shark tours since they spend some of their time near the surface and feed on reef animals. However, they also dive down as deep as 900 feet on occasion. You can identify a sandbar shark by its strong dorsal ridge and lack of markings. Their entire body is usually light gray or tan, and they can grow up to eight feet.
