Your outdoor deck is the perfect place for family bonding in the warmer seasons, and as such, you want it perfectly stained and set for all of the foot traffic it will experience. To stain your porch just like the professionals do, follow these tips from Huber Lumber Co., Cincinnati’s one-stop shop for all of your building supplies:

  • Make sure the weather is perfect.  It is impossible to stain and set your deck when it is wet or overly hot out, so make sure you do it when there are a couple of mild and sunny days ahead.
  • Prepare your deck by removing all items and cleaning it off.  Once you have removed all of the deck furniture and plants, sand down all grade stamps, scuffs and splintered areas until they are smooth. Also get rid of any debris such as dead leaves that have fallen over time, and make sure that all cracks are as clear as possible. Cover any surrounding plants with clear sheeting as well so that they aren’t splattered with chemicals.
  • When applying the stain, use a paint roller or spray can.  Make sure to stir the stain thoroughly, but don’t shake it or else bubbles will form on the finish. Apply the stain in a thin, even coat and roll out any puddles that happen to form on the finish so that everything sets evenly. For the hard-to-reach spots like steps, railings, and cracks, use a paint brush. After you are done, allow the deck to dry completely before you use it.
