Your tires are an essential part of your vehicle. Without them, you wouldn't go anywhere. However, tires also need to be in stable condition; otherwise, you are more susceptible to a flat or blowout. Stay safe on the road by knowing the signs you're due for new tires.

How to Tell When You Need New Tires

1. Sidewall Cracks

Tire rubber is always facing a plethora of elements. The heat from the road, direct sunlight, brake dust, rain, and ozone all wear down the material and cause it to age. These hazards result in less elasticity and develop cracks—usually in the sidewall. Typically, this problem does not occur until towards the end of the tire's lifespan, but it's a common issue in cars if you do not drive them frequently or have improper tire inflation.

2. Shallow Tread Depth

The tread is the part of the tirenew tires that most often contacts the road. This aspect consists of all visible surface area from one shoulder to the other. As the blocks—protruding rubber with grooves running in between them—wear down, the tires have less grip on the pavement and are more prone to overheating. For safety, you should have at least one-sixteenth inch of tread running around the tire. Test this depth by placing a penny headfirst into the grooves at several points. If you can see the entirety of Lincoln's head, it's time for new tires.

3. Tread Bars

Manufacturers design new tires with wear indicators that appear when the tread gets too low. These bars run perpendicular to the rest of the tread and will slowly emerge as the tires are worn down. If you notice more than two bars, go ahead and perform the penny test to check the tread depth.
