Cremation, which reduces a dead body to ashes by burning, is an alternative to traditional in-ground burials. If you are considering cremation services for a recently passed family member or your end-of-life disposition, you may have a lot of questions about it. Here’s what you should know about what to expect.

Cremation Services FAQ

How does cremation work?

During cremation, the body is placed in a container or casket then moved into a chamber and burned at high heat—1,400 degrees. It takes about two hours for a body to be reduced to ash at that temperature. The remains are then ground to break apart any large fragments and placed into an urn.

Which religions permit cremation?

Most religions permit cremation. Roman Catholic canon law allows it, as long as the ashes are entombed or buried. Most Protestant faiths, reform and conservative Jewish congregations, Buddhists, and Hindus all permit it as well. Adherents of Greek Orthodoxy, Islam, Orthodox Judaism, and some fundamentalist Protestant groups do not.

The ashes can be placed in a decorative urn, and kept at home or in a mausoleum or columbarium. A columbarium is a structure lined with recesses for urns. They can be buried in a cemetery or on private property. They can also be scattered across an area of significance to the deceased, although permission should first be sought. Some families may choose to plant them with a tree or carry them inside a piece of jewelry.

Can the family witness the cremation?

Most facilities will allow the family to watch, though policies differ depending on the cemetery. Space, also, may limit the number of witnesses.
