When you live in an apartment, there may be small upgrades you’d like to make without calling the landlord. The following improvements are affordable, landlord-friendly fixes to try—although always follow your individual lease agreement before making any changes.

5 Apartment Upgrades Most Landlords Allow

1. Personalize Light Fixtures

Once you’ve moved in, a good way to put a personalized stamp on the space is to change out ceiling lights. Simple overhead light fixtures are easy to replace with colors and styles of your choosing. Measure the current light so that the new selection will fit. Save the originals in a safe place and replace them when moving out.

2. Creative Stickering

apartmentAre the appliances in your apartment looking a little tired? Upgrade the appearance with stickers made specifically for kitchen appliances such as dishwashers, stoves, and refrigerators. The new “surface” comes in rolls with an adhesive backing that can be cut to fit. You can also buy stickers that are designed to mimic subway or another decorative tile for backsplashes or countertops. These durable vinyl stickers are removable when it’s time to move out and easily wiped down with a damp cloth.

3. Change Light Switch Plates & Light Bulbs

In addition to changing out light fixtures, a different color or style of light bulb can change the ambiance of a room. Consider installing smart bulbs that can be turned off and on with a phone. Usually rewiring is not required to install these new energy-saving bulbs. You can also change out boring switch plates with decorative styles you prefer. Save the old plates for when you move out.

4. Change Cabinet Hardware

Another easy fix is to change out cabinet drawer and door pulls.  Measure to ensure you get an appropriate size and then have fun picking new items at a local DIY store. As with every other upgrade, save the original items, with screws, to be replaced later.

5. Get Nice Rugs

Add your own decor look and cover the flooring with beautiful area rugs. This will also help keep the original floor clean and free from damage. Good rugs can last a lifetime if cared for properly and add an elegant, international feel to any room.
