Trophies and awards are built to last as testaments to your accomplishments. However, depending on the material, they can tarnish, warp, or collect dust if you don’t take care of them. Use the following advice to maintain these honors and keep them pristine for years to come.

How to Care for Trophies & Awards

Glass & Crystal

Dust glass and crystal items regularly — about twice a month. Use a microfiber cloth to wipe up any liquids or spills immediately. If extensive dust has built up, use a light glass cleaner. Only spray it onto the fabric, however, and refrain from using vinegar that may stain the awards.

Silver, gold, and zinc trophies and awards all need special care. Polish silver-plated pieces once a month to prevent tarnishing. Wipe with a clean rag in only one direction — never back and forth. Rinse gold-plated items with water and clean them with a soft cloth. Never use harsh chemicals, and always dry the trophy afterward. Zinc awards are often color-plated. Use lukewarm water and dish soap to lightly scrub zinc trophies and awards so that they maintain their color.

Wood

Wooden awards, plaques, or trophy bases need occasional polishing. Otherwise, keep this material dry at all times. To clean them, spray wood polish onto a clean cloth and wipe the accolade down, careful not to get the polish on metal or other hardware. Dust wood elements regularly and keep them out of direct sunlight, high temperatures, and humidity.
