Dental phobias are a common issue among patients of all ages and can lead to delayed care. If anxiety is creating roadblocks, dental sedation may be exactly what you need; there are several methods that can be used. These will ensure you receive the dental care you need and are comfortable through the process.

Your Guide to Dental Sedation

1. Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, also called “laughing gas,” is the most well-known dental sedation. A dentist will have you inhale nitrous oxide. This reduces pain processing in the brain and will help you relax throughout the procedure. Once finished, the effects will wear off a few minutes after so you can go about your day.

2. Oral Sedation

If you need something more powerful, your dentist may offer a relaxing medication. These are usually given 30 minutes before treatment. You may feel extremely relaxed, or even fall asleep. Just let the staff know ahead of treatment about other medications you’re taking so the oral sedation won’t interfere. It’s helpful to contact your primary care physician as well.

3. IV Sedation

Your dental team will monitor your response and can increase or decrease the quantity if needed. IV sedation can take longer to wear off, so plan on having a friend pick you up after treatment.

4. General Anesthesia

If you’re undergoing extensive dental surgery, such as dental implants or bone grafting, your dentist might recommend general anesthesia. This dental sedation will help you go to sleep in stay in a relaxed state until the procedure is over. Because it’s part of standard surgery, you’ll need to change into a gown, and will receive an IV, facemask, and be fully intubated until the treatment is complete.
