When something goes wrong with your car on a busy freeway, it can be a frightening scenario. With traffic speeding over 60 miles per hour, it can be dangerous to have a breakdown and possibly lead to an accident. Here are three tips for getting yourself and your car to safety while you wait for roadside assistance.

3 Ways to Stay Safe While Pulling Off the Freeway

1. Get As Far Off the Road as Possible

When your car breaks down or blows a tire, try and get your vehicle off the roadway as fast as possible. It’s equally important to get as far away from the traffic as possible. This means moving your car as far off the shoulder as possible. Any kind of pull-off, driveway, or safe grassy area is even better. Call for roadside assistance as soon as possible, even if the spot seems safe. Refrain from trying to work on your car by yourself on the shoulder of the road.

2. Stand Clear of Your Car While Waiting

roadside assistanceWhen waiting for roadside assistance, stand visibly away from your car, either in front of it or on the side of it away from traffic. You want to avoid a scenario where oncoming traffic either hits you or your car. If there is a railing, step over it and wait on the other side. While waiting in the car may seem safer, you may still be in danger if someone collides with the parked car. Wherever you wait, always keep your eye on oncoming traffic.

3. Carry Flares or Hazard Flags

This is especially important at night, when oncoming traffic may not be able to see you on a dark shoulder. Not only do these signals alert other motorists of your location, but it also helps the towing process. Police will also be able to find you faster. Whenever possible, turn on your car’s emergency hazards, even if it’s daylight. It is always better to use as many tools as possible to guarantee your safety.
