Injuries from falls are a serious health concern for older adults. A recent study found that more than 28% of Americans over 65 reported falling in 2014, and more than 25,000 elderly Americans died from a fall in 2016. In addition, the number of deaths from fall-related injuries is increasing.

Falls are also a serious issue for your finances and your estate planning. A fall can result in a short-term rehab or nursing home stay and can cost tens of thousands of dollars to provide care

NPR recently interviewed a doctor who specializes in geriatric medicine, who suggests some things you can do to prevent falls. The doctor interviewed in this piece says the most important thing is to stay active, but make sure the activities you choose don’t put you at a greater risk of falling. Additionally, it’s important to focus on improving your balance, and try to avoid medications that might cause dizziness.
