A bunion is a large swelling or bump at the base of your toe that causes pain and makes walking difficult. It’s a common foot condition as people age. Without treatment, bunions may become debilitating. Here are some frequently asked questions about bunions.

Bunion FAQ

What causes them?

Bunions are caused by a foot or joint deformity. Some people are born with a natural inclination to develop them. Other people develop them over time by wearing improperly fitted shoes. Tight or poorly fitting shoes can disfigure the bones of the foot and cause bunions to form.

Why are they so painful?

When your big toe swells, the resulting pressure can be quite painful. Continual pressure on feet causes bunions to grow and puts sufferers at risk for developing arthritis in the joint.

What are the symptoms?

bunionsBunions are large red bumps or swellings that appear at the base of your toe, usually your big toe. You’ll see a shiny red swelling when you take off your shoes where the swelling has rubbed against your footwear. The swelling will be warm to the touch as well, and it may throb with piercing pain. Schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to have your condition evaluated.

How do you treat them?

If you’ve had untreated bunions for many years, your podiatrist may suggest corrective surgery. To alleviate pain and pressure, a podiatrist may suggest gel wraps, toe pads, or orthotic inserts. Anti-inflammatory medications and cortisone shots may help as well.
