When you’ve just graduated from school, you might wonder how you can make the most of the alumni network at your disposal. You don't have to wait until your next alumni event to begin networking. Here are some ways to help you connect and build relationships with your school's alumni association.

4 Ways to Network With Your Alumni Association

1. Find the Right People

Try to find professionals working in your desired industry. If your school has their own alumni career site, start there. You can also look up people who went to your school on online platforms like LinkedIn, then filter the results by industry or job descriptions.

2. Craft the Perfect Email

You want to come off as approachable, yet professional, so avoid using slang and sounding too informal. When meeting people at an alumni event, ask for their business cards or contact information. Send them an email later saying you wish to connect with them and hope they’ll keep you in mind for future business opportunities.

3. Ask Questions

Networking with people begins with getting to know them professionally, then personally. The first couple of questions should be related to their job, company, industry, and other work-related topics. Listening to their experiences will give you a better idea of whether your desired career is the right fit. When you know the person a little more, you can ask more personal questions, like their aspirations or hobbies outside of work, which shows you’re genuinely interested in them as a person, not just a foot in the door.

4. Stay Active Online

Maintaining an active online presence will give you more exposure, which can lead to more helpful contacts. For example, when you interact with other people’s LinkedIn posts, their connections will see your name and comment. Share insightful articles as well to let those in your network know what you’re interested in. When other people accept your invitation to connect, message them to let them know you appreciate the link and why you’d like to get to know them better.
