Watering your lawn is key to maintaining a healthy home appearance. Before you commit to a lawn irrigation system, you need to select a sprinkler head that’s most appropriate for your needs. Which is the right choice for your outdoor space? Here’s what you need to know.

How to Choose a Sprinkler Head for Your Lawn

What Types of Sprinkler Heads Are Available?

There are several different options available to homeowners. Fixed spray heads are situated flush to the ground, almost like devices that bathe the lawn in a single spot. They spray water in a fan-like pattern over a particular area. You might elect for the water to fall in a semicircle or in a complete circle based on the type of nozzle you choose. It’s a desirable option for a small- to medium-size lawn that doesn’t require significant coverage. Larger yards may fare better with rotor heads, which rotate to deliver moisture to the yard in a circular formation.

How Does Water Pressure Affect This?

lawn irrigationThe water pressure delivered by your lawn irrigation system is measured as pounds per square inch, or psi. The general water pressure for a standard sprinkler system is approximately 30 psi, a rate at which fixed spray heads operate well. Anything above this pressure level may put too much strain on the head and cause it to spray mist. For higher pressure homes, a rotor spray handles the burden more effectively.

What Other Factors Should You Consider?

Examine the configuration of your landscaping when choosing a sprinkler head. If it contains many curves, a rotor is likely the better option because you can more easily water those complex spots. However, if you have sections of yard that are decorated with mulch or stones, a rotor may end up watering areas you’d like to keep dry. In that case, a fixed sprinkler installation is a safer option because of its limited reach.
