Bicycle chains are a vital component designed to transfer energy from the pedals to power the wheels. This mechanism is crafted from carbon or steel and is fairly sturdy, but it can succumb to wear. Fortunately, by investing in routine bike maintenance, you can keep the part intact for as long as possible. To help you get the most out of your bike chain, here are a few tips on how to care for it and when you should consider a replacement.

How Should You Maintain a Bike Chain?

bicycleIn general, bicycle chains should be cleaned at least once a month to remove harmful grease, dirt, and other debris. If you’re a heavy rider, it may be more appropriate to clean it every week.

For a quick clean, place the bike in a position that allows you to pedal freely with your hand. Apply a considerable amount of degreaser to a clean rag and wrap it around the chain. Rotate the pedal backward with your hand so that the chain moves through the rag.

Regular lubrication is necessary to keep your bicycle moving smoothly. After cleaning, apply a bicycle lube product to the chain. To do this, place the tip of the bottle over the chain. While moving the pedal, squeeze a steady, light stream of lube over the entire length until it’s all covered. Cycle the pedal a few times to ensure that the lubrication distributes evenly.

How Can You Tell If You Need New Bike Chain?

If your chain breaks frequently, it is probably worn out and needs to be replaced. Rust is another sign of damage that calls for replacement.

You should also consider the mileage of your bike. On average, bike chains last about 2,000 miles. If you’ve exceeded this distance, visit a bike repair shop for a replacement.

Next, you should measure the rivets. As a chain wears, its rivets will get further and further apart. Hold the chain taut and place one rivet at the zero-mark of a ruler or tape measure. Ideally, another rivet should be at the 12-inch mark. If it’s more than 1/16” ahead, replace it.
