A water-resistant fabric is ideal when you’re working on a project that may be used outside or otherwise exposed to moisture. Before you head to the fabric store, learn what your options are so you know how to choose a material that will last.

A Fabric Store Guide to Water-Resistant Options

1. Polyurethane Laminate

Polyurethane laminate or PUL is made of polyester with a plastic backing coated in a water-resistant material. The fabric comes in a variety of thicknesses so it can be completely waterproof or just resistant. Because it’s soft and breathable, it’s a comfortable option for clothing and diapers.

2. Ripstop

Though not completely waterproof, it’s close to it. It doesn’t stretch either, making it a solid choice for rain coats, camping supplies, sacks, outdoor furniture upholstery, and shower curtains.

3. Laminated Cotton

Laminated cotton is similar to PUL in that it has a water-resistant coating. It’s a more eco-friendly fabric than PUL since it doesn’t have a coating on both sides, but it’s also not as water-resistant. This breathable and flexible fabric is suitable for lightweight ponchos, windbreakers, and hats.
