Your car’s transmission is one of its most important parts. In charge of transferring power from the engine to the wheels for movement, a working one is second only to your motor regarding your car's drivability. A few signals will alert you to your vehicle’s need for transmission service, including puddles of fluid in your driveway. To be sure the leak is coming from your transmission, take note of a few reliable indicators.

3 Definite Signs Your Vehicle Is Leaking Transmission Fluid

1. Dark Puddles

Transmission fluid isn’t the only liquid that can leak from your car, but its red color is a tell-tale sign. Pay attention to the location of the red puddles your vehicle is leaving behind since pools near the front or middle of your car are indicators of a leaky transmission. If you haven’t had a transmission service in a while, the color can have a brownish tint.

2. Fluid Consistency

Slippery in texture, transmission fluid is a greasy liquid that smells a bit like gasoline with a slight burnt odor if it’s time for a change.

3. Difficulty Switching Gears

Your car’s performance is one of the main signs of leaks and a need for transmission service. If you have a manual or automatic vehicle that is having difficulty switching between gears, or switches gears for no reason, you need immediate repairs. Pay attention to how long it takes to move forward after changing from ‘park’ to ‘drive’; if your car hesitates and the engine revs, your transmission is sticking.
