1. Maintenance Record

A new car, whether fresh off the assembly line or previously owned, is an investment. You don't want to drive off the used car lot and head directly to an auto repair shop. The condition of the car will tell you if the previous owner cared for the car responsibly. If the owner has invoices that document maintenance and oil changes, read through them. Look the car over for signs of possible maintenance problems. Check the body for dents, dings, scratches, rust, and loose hardware. Look at the condition of the tires. Test all the electrical components, and consider the condition of the interior. Open the hood to examine the hoses and belts—they should be tight. Take note of any fluid leaks or stains, both under the hood and underneath the vehicle. Take a test drive. If the engine rattles or screeches or if the steering wheel vibrates, walk away.

2. Vehicle History

Purchase the vehicle history report to get a comprehensive record of any used car you're considering purchasing. A CARFAX® report, for example, will list previous owners, major repairs performed, and accidents. Read the report carefully.  A long vehicle history report shouldn't preclude you from buying a used car.

3. Interior & Exterior Features

Make a list of the features your ideal car should have—automatic transmission, air conditioning, keyless entry, Bluetooth®-enabled sound systems, and antitheft protection—and tell the used car salesperson what you're seeking. Spend your time looking only at the cars that meet your requirements.
