How do you ensure your dog gets adequate health care? Some people learn by growing up with the responsibility of a dog’s care. Others might only learn later in life. Robinwood Kennel in Highland Heights, KY knows how to take care of dogs, which is why they've been in the pet daycare business since 1970.

In order to help you better care for your pet, these dog-sitting experts have provided the following canine preventative health care guidelines:

  • Find a Vet Now: Schedule a veterinary appointment as soon as you bring home your puppy or grown dog. Some animal shelters will only adopt to people who have an existing reference from a veterinary clinic.
  • Vaccinations: If your dog hasn't been vaccinated, or if you aren't sure, your vet will start him or her on a new regimen. Most vaccinations consist of several booster shots every few weeks. The “core” vaccines usually protect against rabies, parvovirus, distemper and other common illnesses.
  • Spaying & Neutering: If you’d rather your dog not breed, intentionally or accidentally, when your pet reaches about two months of age, you’ll need to schedule a neutering appointment. Spaying or neutering before your dog reaches six months old is the most effective way to combat overpopulation, sexually transmitted diseases and territorial spraying.
  • Parasites: Place your dog on flea, tick and heartworm prevention regimens as early as a few weeks of age.
  • Dental Care: Just like humans, dogs need their teeth brushed regularly with a soft bristle brush. You can also buy certain chewable products to break down plaque and tartar buildup.
  • Follow-Up Care: Visit the vet at least every year for a checkup and tooth cleaning. This will help you stay on top of all potential issues as soon as they arise. Senior dogs should get yearly blood work.
