In a single year, distracted driving is responsible for 391,000 auto accident injuries and accounts for 25 percent of all auto accident deaths. These staggering numbers serve as a reminder that all drivers need to take steps to reduce distractions while they're at the wheel. Below are four driving instructions to help you be a more aware and focused motorist.

How to Avoid Distracted Driving

1. Limit the Number of Passengers

The more people there are in your vehicle, the easier it is to lose focus. Engaging in conversations, passing items to a friend sitting behind you, discussing which song should be played next — these are all distractions that can take your focus away from the road. To maintain a calm and quiet vehicle, avoid traveling with more passengers than you think you can handle.

2. Don't Eat While Driving

drivingA quick drive-through run on your way to school or work may be convenient, but eating can be a serious distraction when driving. One study suggests that a surprising 80% of all car accidents are caused by drivers who are eating. After stopping for food, minimize distractions by taking the time to eat at the restaurant, pulling over at a park or rest stop, or waiting until you reach your destination.

3. Avoid Phone Conversations

Talking on a phone can easily draw your attention away from the road, even if you’re using hands-free equipment. Only use hands-free devices during emergencies, and never hold your phone to make calls while the vehicle is in motion. Similarly, avoid engaging in conversations with others in the vehicle. When safety is your priority, there's nothing inappropriate about telling passengers that you can't talk.

4. Keep Your Cellphone Out of Sight

In addition to avoiding phone calls, keep your phone out of sight when you’re behind the wheel. Having your phone readily accessible increases the temptation to use it. You might be tempted to glance at a text or to change the song, but a second or two is all it takes for an accident to happen.
