A pool heater is a must for extending the swimming pool season. If you’re looking into upgrading your pool by installing a heater, use these three tips to purchase a product that meets all your comfort and functional needs.

A Guide to Pool Heaters

1. Match Your Pool Size

An undersized heater won’t get the job done; an oversized heater wastes energy. Match your pool’s gallon size to the heater’s BTUs—a measure of its heating capacity. Pools with a capacity of 1,000 to 10,000 gallons need a heater with a BTU rating of 100 to 200. Those in the 10,000- to 20,000-gallon range require a 200- to 300-BTU unit. If your pool holds 20,000 to 40,000 gallons of water, get a heater with a BTU rating of 300 to 400. Any pools over 40,000 gallons in size require 400-BTU heater. Another thing to factor in is how much surface area your pool has; the more surface area, the faster the heat loss.

2. Maintenance

pool heaterPool heaters need some care throughout the year to ensure efficient operation. In addition to routine cleaning, heat pumps, for example, require Freon at required levels (which means contacting your local HVAC technician). Solar heaters, however, should be serviced only by a trained solar energy professional. A trusted pool care team will help with whatever heater repairs or maintenance you need.

3. Power Options

Pool heaters will add to your monthly utility expenses, so consider operating costs. Solar heaters run almost exclusively on solar power and will barely impact bills. Gas heaters require a connection with a natural gas line or have propane tanks refilled. Heat pumps are more efficient with energy but are limited at the beginning and end of the season. Exclusively electric pool heaters, while convenient, are the most costly to operate. These are predominantly used with spas and smaller, indoor pools.
