Many water leaks in your home develop slowly, but some strike without warning. A burst pipe can happen for a number of reasons, resulting from freezing temperatures, a change in pressure within the pipe, or exterior damage to your plumbing system. When your pipe springs a leak, the volume and force of the water can cause extensive damage in your home. To prevent this, call a plumber immediately, then follow these steps.

What to Do While Waiting for a Plumbing Contractor

1. Shut Off the Main Valve

PlumberFind your main water valve where your water supply enters your home. This is usually somewhere in your basement or on the home's exterior. Turning it off cuts off the supply of water to the whole house, preventing more water from pouring out of a broken pipe.

2. Turn Off the Electricity

When water seeps through your walls and onto floors, it creates an electrocution hazard if it comes in contact with your electrical fixtures. Get to your breaker box if it’s clear of water, and flip the breakers. Otherwise, simply keep people away out of the area, and warn your plumber on arrival.

3. Catch As Much Water As Possible

If water is still seeping out, catch it in a bucket or basin to prevent it from adding to the water damage in your home. As long as your drain pipes aren't leaking, you can pour the water into a drain. You can also turn on your taps and flush your toilet to divert as much water as possible away from a leak.
