When you turn on the faucet to wash your hands or fill a glass of water, you probably don’t think about how the liquid gets there. If you rely on a well water supply system, it goes through an intricate process in your property before getting to your plumbing fixture. Here are three of the most important parts of your well that help transport water to your home.

Important Components in Your Well

1. Casing

With modern wells, the water shoots up from underground through a tube called the well casing. This structure prevents the earth around the channel from collapsing and blocking water flow. It also keeps dirt and other forms of sediment out of your drinking supply. The casing of a well water supply system is often made out of plastic, or stainless or carbon steel.

2. Pump

water supply systemHow does the water get from the underground aquifers, up the casing, and into your home? This process is all due to the well pump. If you have a shallow well (25 feet or shallower) your contractor will probably install a jet pump, which is positioned above the ground. These pumps use suction to pull water upwards. If you have a deeper well, your contractor may install a submersible pump, which is installed underwater and pushes water upwards.

3. Caps & Screens

Caps and screens are essential because they prevent pests and debris from entering your water supply system. The well cap sits on top of the opening at ground level to keep these unwanted items out. It may be made of plastic or aluminum. The well screen, which is connected to the base of the casing, takes care of the other end. This prevents particles inside the aquifer from coming up into the casing, allowing clear water to filter through.
