Whether it happens across the span of a few weeks or just a day, flooding from a big storm is often inevitable. Many homeowners know how storms impact their basements and siding, but may be confused about how they affect water wells. If you’re worried about potential health risks and whether subsequent well services or repairs are necessary, here’s what you need to know about storm-damaged wells.

Storms, Flooding & Water Wells

Contaminants in the Runoff

The biggest threat to your water well is from surface water runoff. As the volume of water increases, it absorbs whatever is on the surface of the soil and on nearby roadways—dirt, fertilizers, pesticides, and leaked automotive liquids. If this polluted runoff reaches your well as it drains away, it could breach the well casing and contaminate your water.

After-Storm Damage

If it looks like your well has been compromised, book an appointment with a water well service so that they inspect your well and its contents. They’ll test your water for bacteria, nitrates, and heavy minerals and treat and repair your well system as required.

Prevention

Take steps to minimize the likelihood of contaminated runoff from storms and the expense of well service calls and repairs. Position your downspouts to flow water away from your well.  Adjust your landscaping if any grasses or mulch affect the direction of the water flow. Reduce the presence of pollutants around your well. Don’t store any poisons, e.g., near your well installation. In addition, pay attention to weather forecasts, and avoid using synthetic fertilizers or pesticides on your property in the day or two before a storm is expected.
