One of the most popular alumni events your school will have is the class reunion. Whether it’s after 10 years or 50, it’s an opportunity to reconnect with old classmates, network, and create new friendships. Here are a few simple tips to help you keep the connections going after the reunion.

How to Connect With People You Met at a Class Reunion

1. Use Social Media

Almost everyone uses social media these days, and it’s an easy, friendly way to get in touch after the reunion. If you’re networking for your career, find the person on LinkedIn or their professional Facebook page, and send them a message once you’ve added them. For more casual interactions, sites like Twitter and Instagram will give you insights into their life and personality, and you’ll be able to reference recent pictures or events they’ve posted as a conversation opener.

2. Reach out With Their Contact Information

If you got their contact information during the class reunion, use it! Whether it’s a business card, phone number, or email address, follow up with them a few days after the event. The method of contact you use should be whichever one you think they’d prefer, based on what they gave you, their age, and how close you are to them. A simple email or a friend request on Facebook will get you connected without seeming intrusive or overeager.

3. Reference Your Conversations From the Reunion

Ask follow-up questions about something you both enjoyed discussing. If it comes naturally, compliment them in some way, whether it’s about how well they’re doing or how much fun you had talking with them. This helps break the ice and hopefully makes them warm up to you.

4. Plan to Get Together Again

Ask the person if they’d be interested in meeting up again sometime in the near future. How and when this is done should be appropriate to your relationship with them. If you’re reconnecting with an old friend who you get along with at alumni events, this can be as soon as the first conversation. Invite them to dinner, see a movie, go shopping, or go golfing together. If you’re not close with them and share more of a formal relationship, ask them out for coffee or offer to buy lunch after you’ve had a few conversations that have gone well.
